West Covina Judo Dojo Promotion Requirements (compiled by Sensei Horiuchi)
Rok-kyu (White belt, 6th kyu)
General requirements:
This rank is assigned to individuals who are17 years and above, with good moral character who have been accepted as students of the West Covina Judo Dojo.
Go-kyu (White belt, 5th kyu)
General Requirements:
Good moral character and maturity
Regular practice and attendance
Must be a member of the Dojo in good standing
General Knowledge:
Name of the mother school of Judo, location, and founding date.
Basic Judo hygiene
Basic Judo etiquette
Purpose of Falling (ukemi in all directions)
Purpose of warm up ad cooling off exercise
Elementary Judo terminology
Understanding of Judo spirit
Wearing and folding of the judo gi properly
Correct forms of standing and kneeling
Correct forms of standing and kneeling salutations (Ritsu- and Za-rei)
Basic fundamentals of:
Grasping/Gripping (kumi-kata)
Posture (shisei)
Natural posture (shizen-hontai)
Defensive posture (jigo -ai)
Right and left defensive posture (Migi- and Hidari-jigo-tai
Free practice (randori)
Body movement (tai-no-ido)
Normal walking (ayumi ashi)
Pivoting t (tai-sabaki)
Forms of unbalance (happo-no-kuzushi)
Elements of throwing (Kuzushi, tsukuri, kake)
Ability to demonstrate nage waza (throwing techniques):
O soto gari (major outer reap)
O goshi (major hip throw)
De ashi barai (advanced foot sweep)
Hiza guruma (knee wheel throw)
Ability to demonstrate holding (pinning) techniques (osae komi waza):
Hon kesa gatame (basic scarf hold)
Kata gatame (shoulder hold)
Tournament experience (shiai):
Limited contest experience, familiarity with training exercises with emphasis on etiquette, rules and prohibited matter. No contest points required.
Yon-Kyu (white belt, 4th kyu)
General requirements:
Improved degree of the lower rank requirements.
General knowledge:
Additional knowledge of the origin, history, and development of Kodokan judo.
Improved degree of skill with the lower rank requirements.
Japanese terminology, color, and order of Judo belt ranking system.
Advanced Judo etiquette.
Difference between Judo and JuJitsu.

Maximum Efficiency with optimum use of Energy (Seiryoku zenyo)
Mutual welfare and Benefit (Jita Kyoei)
Ability to demonstrate:

Seoi nage (shoulder throw)

Hold down techniques (katame waza):
Hairi kata/waza – entry into osaekomi waza
Kuzure kesa gatame (modified scarf hold)
Yoko shiho gatame (side four-corner hold)
Choke techniques (shime waza):
Kata juji jime (half cross choke)
Gyaku juji jime (reverse cross choke)
Tournament experience (shiai):
Continued contest experience with expanded interpretation of the sports phase. No contest wins required for promotion to this rank.
San-Kyu (brown belt, 3rd kyu)
General requirements:
Much improved degree of the lower rank requirements.
General knowledge:
Judo terminology, judo etiquette, and further development of judo spirit.
Additional knowledge of the fundamental principles of Judo:
Maximum Efficiency with optimum use of Energy (Seiryoku zenyo), Mutual welfare and Benefit (Jita Kyoei), and
Self Improvement/Perfection (Jiko no kansei).
Names, colors, and order of ranking system.
Purpose and methods of the “Kata and Randori”
Ability to demonstrate:
Throwing techniques (nage waza):
Improved degree of skill with lower rank requirements.
1st kyo of the Gokyo no waza (all 8 techniques)
2nd kyo of the Gokyo no waza (5 techniques)
3rd kyo of the Gokyo no waza (2 techniques)
Ability o demonstrate techniques other than normal side.
Kaeshi waza (counter techniques) – 2 tech. from the 1st kyo.
Hold down techniques (katame waza):
Kuzure kami shiho gatame (modified upper four corner hold)
Kuzure yoko shiho gatame (modified side four-corner hold)
Tate shiho gatame (vertical four corner hold)
Fusegi – defense and escape forms (nogare kata) for all hold downs of all previous rank requirements.
Choke techniques (shime waza):
Kata juji jime (half cross choke)
Gyaku juji jime (reverse cross choke)
Nami juji jime (normal cross choke)
Okuri eri jime (sliding lapel choke)
Arm locks (kansetsu waza):
Ude hishigi juji gatame (cross arm lock)
Forms of Throwa (Nage no kata):
Uke for the first 3 groups (Te, Koshi, and Ashi waza)
Tournament experience (shiai):
Contest experience and participation should be a major part of training.
Ni-Kyu (brown belt, 2nd kyu)
General requirements:
Develop further in all lower rank requirements.
Six month time-in-grade as San-kyu
Nanka tournament points earned as San-kyu
General knowledge:
Knowledge of at least one 10th degree master of the Kodokan.
Judo etiquette, and strong development of judo spirit.

General requirements:
Must be a member in good standing of the dojo and USJF
Good moral character and maturity.
Regular practice and good judo spirit.
Increased proficiency in all lower rank requirements.

General knowledge:
National organizations, knowledge of USJF, USA-Judo (USJI), USJA, CJI composition and functions, official purpose and function of the yudashakai, name of local yudanshakai and yudanshakai officials. Official function of the Parents federation of Nanka.
